Gartner is equally blunt: at least 30% of generative AI projects will be abandoned after proof of concept by the end of 2025. Not after failure in production—after the proof of concept stage. 4. Infrastructure Gaps
Even when the model works, the surrounding infrastructure often doesn't. No data pipeline to feed it. No monitoring to track drift. No deployment system to serve it reliably. RAND found that investing in data engineers and ML engineers—not more data scientists—can substantially shorten development timelines.
5. The Problem Is Too Hard
Some AI projects fail because the problem itself isn't solvable with current AI technology. Organizations attempt projects that require reasoning capabilities, causal understanding, or generalization that today's models simply can't deliver. Ambition is valuable. But ambition without feasibility assessment is just expensive optimism.

Notice what's missing from this list: the technology itself. AI projects rarely fail because the algorithms don't work. They fail because the process around the technology is broken—wrong problem, wrong data, wrong infrastructure, wrong expectations. Fix the process and the technology delivers.

The 4-Phase Framework

What Each Phase Actually Delivers
Phase 1: Research
Before you build anything, you need to know if the problem is solvable, if the data exists, and if the technology can deliver what the business needs. Research isn't academic hand-wringing—it's the cheapest insurance policy in AI.

- Feasibility assessment—Can AI solve this specific problem at the accuracy level you need?

Phase 3: Build
Now you build—but you build with a clear problem definition, validated data, proven feasibility, and defined architecture. The build phase isn't where AI projects begin. It's where they accelerate.
This phase produces:

- Infrastructure—Data pipelines, monitoring, automated testing, deployment automation

Phase 4: Train
